.com is an abbreviation for commercial. This is the most popular generic top level domain on the web and can be purchased by anyone. .com is one of the original top level domains. In January 1993 the National Science Foundation took over the maintenance, which contracted it to Network Solutions. In 1995 they began charging $50 for every registered domain name, $35 of which went to Network Solutions and $15 to a government fund. In 1997 the Department of Commerce took over authority of all .com and other TLD's. Since then pricing has come down significantly, but pricing can vary or change. By mid 2008 over 77 million .com domains have been registered. .com extensions were initially designed for commercial use but since the mid 1990's those restrictions have been lifted and .com's can be used for any type of website. Although companies worldwide can use .com extensions many countries have opted to start using using a second level domain using their two letter country code, for example .com.xx or .co.xx. such as Mexico would be .com.mx or .co.mx.
