.info.info is a generic top level domain. It was originally created for informational based websites, however there are no real restrictions. Therefore, .info domains are available to the general public. .info extensions were created by ICANN in late 2000 along with six other generic top level domain (gTLD) extensions which were originally created to remove the pressure from the high demand for .com gTLDs. .info has been the most successful of the new gTLD's. By April 2008, .info had registered over 5.2 million domains. There are also 1.6 million .info websites in active and dedicated use with unique content. Because .info is an unrestricted gTLD anyone can obtain this second level domain, unlike some other TLD's which have specific restrictions and qualifications such as .edu (for education websites). .info is the only TLD that was originally and specifically designed for unrestricted use although others have become that way over time. .info is a neutral name meaning information in about 37 languages around the world.
