.name

.name is a (gTLD) generic top level domain available to the general public. .name was created specifically for use of individuals' real names, nicknames, screen names, pseudonyms, or other personal names. In 2001 the .name extension was given to Global Name Registry but did not come completely operational until January 2002.

When a domain is registered on the second level (doe.name), third level domains under this second level (john.doe.name) are associated with the second level domain, and may not be registered with the .name registry. Other objects like janedoe.name remain unaffected.

The .name is intended for use by real and fictional individuals and personalities. .name addresses are increasingly being used as a more personal or unique identifier and natural address for Digital Identity applications.
