.net.net is a (gTLD) generic top level domain, which stands for .network. Verisign currently operates the .net gTLD. Registrations must be processed via accredited registrars. .net is compatible with international domains. .net is one of the original top-level domains created in January 1985. It was initially intended for technical uses such as computers of network providers. However, there are no formal restrictions so anyone can register a .net domain name. While it's still popular with network operators, it is often used synonymously with .com. It is currently the fourth most popular top-level domain, the top three being .com, .cn, and .de. Besides being an abbreviation for "network", "net" also is referenced to the Russian word "het" which means "no" or "not", commonly pronounced "nyet". With this reference a domain name like "thing.net" can be interpreted as "there is no thing". Some domains have fun with this, for example some online poker sites operate with real-money games on their .com sites but use their .net addresses of the same name for their sites that have no money at stake.
